I just had a NOS electronic speedometer installed on my 1995 XL1200 by my local dealer. The odometer is not recording mileage accurately. It indicates about .8 mile for each measure mile. So it is off by about 20%. Will the speedometer be off by a like amount? Can the dealer recalibrate the speedometer? Will one of these units correct the problem? http://www.jpcycles.com/1995-harley-...ibration-units
I've already spent a bunch of time and money getting this NOS speedometer. What's another $100 or so. Some NOS parts are hard to find for 1995 Sportsters
Checked both the speedometer and odometer. Radar for speedometer and measured ten miles for odometer. Both are reading at about 75-80% of actual speed and mileage. Will contact dealer tomorrow. Can this be corrected or do I need another speedometer? I like to be ready for any response the dealer's service department folks might have.
OK. I talked to service manager about problem. He will check with his techs and factory HD technical folks about this. I computed the actual speedometer/odometer error. The error is a 25% low reading throughout the speed range and about a 25% error in the odometer. It appears to me that this new speedometer is not calibrated correctly. I went back to my work order...the part number of the speedometer is correct. However, I think that the part number might have been mis-marked. Any suggestions?
Is this speedo this one shown in my avatar? I just installed that about two weeks ago and it works great so far. You'r suppose to hook the speedo up to the diag connector first to sync it with the ECU. My guess is the tech did not do that.
Darnedest thing that I just happened to check out this almost five year old thread. Yep, the problem was resolved. The service manager concluded that the NOS box was mislabeled. The speedometer was for an 883 rather than a 1200. The 883 has lower gearing than the 1200. A Dakota Digital Re-calibration Module resolved the problem. Had a tech set it up using a dyno....easy peasy. (Because of the hassle I went through I was not charged for the module or the tech time setting it up. Cool. ) https://www.dakotadigital.com/index....od/prd1011.htm
p.s. No ECU on a 1995 Sportster. She's from the "glory days".
