I have the tallest stock one offered by HD for the 1200l, with the quick release. I had to make some brackets to make my shield higher, so now all is good.

Tallest is 19", right? How tall are you?

Mine is 18", from the top of the headlight cutout to the top of the shield. With the qd clamps there is a little adjustment below and above that. I'm around 5' 6" and the view over it is fine.

Guess it depends on what you are trying to do and what you like...

I wanted a shield to help with some of the force on me. I didn't want the tall egg shaped as it looks dated IMO and well silly. The 14" gave me what I wanted in looks and function and though called SMOKE it is just lightly tinted. Not like the BLACK visors on the SG's you see that are only 4" tall above the fairing.

And really...if I'm taking a long highway ride...I take the touring bike anyway. Wind in the face to me is not the concern. CURB weight at highway speeds over time and miles tells the tale in comfort and safety from wind sheer from trucks and other larger vehicles on the highway. Big difference between 520 lbs at 70+ MPG and 1000 lbs at 70+ MPG. I'll take the touring bike every day for that.

Have I taken my Sportie on the highway? YUP for about 200 miles on a trip with the 14" shield on and it worked very well. I seldom remove it except for cleaning up the bike. Its basically my daily rider to work and back.

GOOD LUCK in your selection. YOU are right...they are pricey. My local dealer let me have 1 on the weekend to ride with to see what I liked before I bought it from them.

And BTW I cut down my factory tall windshield on my tour bike. Was way higher than my eyes from the factory. When it fogged up it was scary. I cut it down to 9" tall and it hits me right at the cheek bone - below my eyes if I'm slouching or sitting tall in the seat. Nothing more scary than having it fog up in a valley when you have to look thru it. No issues at slow or highway speeds at this height for me at least.

I used an HD quick release windshield before I went with my fairing. Here is a video on how to measure the correct height.

Unless I come up with a reason to choose otherwise I'm looking at this one:

I am 5.7. I use the 14" quick release. The windshield always on my bike.
Yes, I experience wind buffeting. The wind is from my legs when speed is above 65mph. I only experience this with my 3/4 HJC. I got no wind buffeting when I wear shoei neotec.

I had the 18" clear HD QD shield and had a lot of buffeting up top. I'm the same height as Sir Graham and went with a 19" Clearview with recurve. Pretty calm air at all speeds now, except for the wind coming from under the tank. The 19" is about eye level for me at the top of the shield. The recurve pushed the air up another 1" - 2".

The dealer has a shield size chart to look at and the top of the shield should be between eye level and tip of nose. For me, the 18" was just at the tip of my nose but had buffeting for me. Made me dizzy after about a couple miles.

The nice thing about the HD QD shield is many others make a replacement shield for the bracket so you have some choices if need be.

Nice windshield but a bit pricey. I bought this HD windshield and quick release mounts for $100 off CL.

I can't find my paperwork to confirm, but that looks like the one I have. It's great!
