Gonna ride with it as is a few times, see if I get used to it. Is it normal for the top of it to always be in you field of view? I'm looking over it with my head in normal position, but not by much.
If I end up getting a shorter one, any reason to not get a couple extra inches in with too?
Wreckwriter, I would ride it for awhile to see if you get use to it, and to see if you get any buffeting. If no buffeting, then I would look at a Clearview shield or similar with a recurve in a shorter size if the 18" just feels weird to you. That recurve pushes the air an extra 1 1/2" - 2", so a 16" with a recurve would be like having an 18" in terms of air flow.
You would want the highest shield and still be able to look over and not through the shield. If you look through the shield, then rain or moisture would impair your vision.
WW, I'll offer the solution I've found after many unsuccessful attempts to use any aftermarket windshield on a wide variety of bikes.
One benefit of this arrangement is that it is easily modified, and reasonably priced.
1. I wear a full face or modular helmet.
2. I have an expandable magnetic mount Tank Bag that I use in the full expanded position if I know my ride will include highway riding. I'll even pack it with towels etc. if I know I am going to be doing some distance on the highway.
The full face helmet in clean air flow, has no buffeting effect from even highway speed wind force. The expanded tank bag is actually up and under the forward plane of my ff helmet, and rests against my chest at speed. The tank bag takes the pressure of the wind speed off your chest, and the ff helmet has no vibration or buffeting in clean air. For me, it has been the best and only solution since I parted ways with my BMW R1200RT, which had an electric windshield that you could reposition with a button.
I bought a HD Compact 14" but returned it after 15 minutes on highway. Wind buffeting was very bad. Not recommended.
Iron 883, 2016. I am 5'6". 14" is the right height for me, under my nose. I had to pay the dealer 25% restocking fee in order for them to take it back.
I think its problem was too narrow. The dealer suggested to get me a Touring windshield which was wider but taller. Then cut the top to fit my height. I did not take it. Now since I have ridden more on highway, I am used to being without a windshield.
Are there any advantages or disadvantages for smoked vs. clear windshields besides appearance? I'm thinking about one of the H-D detachable shields for my ride to cut down on wind force at highway speeds.
