1997 sportster coming home from work, lost power , would only idle, shut it off and had no lights or power, let it cool down and started back up till got hot, then did the same , lost power and when you shut it off had no lights , like the battery was dead, has 12.5 volts, cool down and it will start , I also noticed the the tack would mess up when it was running, I checked all the ground wires, all look good, any one else have this issue?
My '95 would just gently die while riding. Turns out is was the ignition switch where the key went into. Got a new ignition and it never happened again.
Possibly the ignition module. On the right ride of the bike. When they start to go bad they will not work once hot. And after it cools down the bike will start again.

Could also be the ignition trigger under the timing cover on the right side of the motor. Look to see if the potting compound had melted. If so, replace it.

I agree with others, it sounds like heat related component failure or complete power failure. Everything suggested sounds possible, so until we get more info. it's hard to know where to continue.
