04 1200C I checked the oil per the owners manual...full to to top mark when hot. open drain hose and let it run til it stops dripping. Pull the filter and let it drain. Go to the Harley shop while it's draining 30 min or so. Install new filter, plug drain hose. Book says it takes 3.6 qts. so I put in 3.5 andwarm it up. Check again per manual WAY OVER FULL!!! checked the drain pan and it didn't look like there was 3.6 qts in it. Why won't all the oil drain out
This is one case where you don't want to follow the owner's manual, or the service manual for that matter. 3 quarts max. and put 4oz of that in the oil filter.
I want to run the oil level about 25% to 33% between the low mark and midway. If you don't, then you'll get to deal with the infamous oil blow-by problems. NOT FUN!!!
A turkey baster works great to remove the excess oil. I don't recall who first suggested that one here, but I didn't want to take credit for someone else's great idea. When I did that, I used just a 3/8" plastic tube I had and created a syphone (damn I wish I could spell).
my bike is a puker. i drain the oil on the stand, then sit on the bike and hold it straight up. still, i use 3 qts and use some of that in the filter. i still puke at that and never added between changes. i can't figure out why they say 3.6 qts.
The reason all of the oil doesn't come out is because HD uses a dry sump oiling system. The oil is not stored in the crankcase like on most cars (new vettes excluded) soa small amount remains in the crankcase. You are draining your oil tank not the crankcase.
I knew it was a dry sump system. But I just figured Harley knew it also. And that by them saying in the owners manual to add 3.6 qts of oil total when changing it that you should add 3.6 qts. Thanks for clearing this up guys

I highly recommend changing the oil after your ride, make sure the engine is fully hot, that way you will get most of the engine oil out and it drains a lot faster too. I put 2L in the oil tank, 4oz in the oil filter, ride the bike for a good 10-15 minutes then top up. I usually put 2.7L and make it the middle of the dip stick. Blow-by is another headache, I like to keep it a bit below the top.
