Default Front fork rebuild question

I've just replaced my forks and seals on a 2004 harley sportster xl 1200 custom. At the top of the forks (where the cap screws on) one of the springs is flush with the top, the other spring sticks out a a few inches. What am I doing wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you extend the fork before re-installing the fork in the triple tree?

I haven't reinstalled them yet, I'm waiting to figure out why one is longer. I tried to pull the shorter one out farther but it won't go.

Is the fork slider pulled all the way to the end of it's travel on both legs?

*I understand they aren't in the triple clamps.*

If the springs aren't wrong, then you messed up the seals and the tubes aren't extending properly.

Yes they are extended as far as I can get them to go. I'll take the seals back out and make sure they go in properly.

This thread has a pic of how far they stuck out on my '05 and the OL's '04 Custom. I don't have a measurement, though.

How far did you break down these forks? Did you leave out the Top-Out spring on one of the dampers and that tube is being pulled out too far?

Just throwin' it out there

Here is another thread that may help. I would redo the fork slider in question.

something is broken inside of the new fork, a bearing or spacer or something? A few small chunks of metal fell out and a small spring. Anyone know what these are? Can they be replaced or will I need to buy another fork?
