Exclamation 2004 xl883 speedometer wiring HELP

I recently purchased a 2004 sportster xl883 and it came with an aftermarket speedometer with the wires hanging off to the side. I attempted to wire it in myself by looking at any wiring diagrams I could find for the bike. The aftermarket speedo (brand is unknown), had 3 wires coming out of it, a red, a black, and a green. I spliced the power and ground wires into the ignition power and ground coming out of the connector which goes to the stock instrument cluster, and I spliced the green signal wire into the databus wire. I am not sure how the databus system works at all. When I wired it in this way, I turned the ignition switch on and the speedo ran through a full sweep self diagnostic type thing, and then would just start going nuts and sweeping all over the place erratically. If anyone could give me any guidance it would be much appreciated!

Also after a little research found out that the speedometer is a j&p cycles mini electric speedometer, p/n 2210-0034.

2004 and later Sporties use digital signals between the ICM and speedo/tach. I believe that speedo is an analog device that would be used on 2003 and earlier Sporties.

A quick check of that p/n at J&P shows up as not available.

This is the link to the speedometer currently on my bike. It is wired in to 12v power and after a little reading apparently the 2004 and up models use a +5v power and are ran through the ICM before reaching the speedo? How would I go about making this speedometer work on my bike or know of a cheap one that would be compatable? I would like to get this working for as cheaply as possible..
