I have a 2007 Heritage and at times, my idle races for a few seconds then drops back to normal..then races again, then drop back to normal...What could be the problem here?
First problem is you posted in the Sportster section, should be in the Softail forum.
Problem with your bike is probably the idle air control (IAC). The IAC is small thing inside the top of the intake manifold just behind the air cleaner. It probably needs cleaning.
Remove the air cleaner, and use some "mass air flow sensor" cleaner. Spray cleaner on the IAC while turning ignition switch on and off. Cycling the ignition on and off will activate/deactivate the IAC, you will see it move.

It could be a hole in your fuel line inside your gas tank . Does your gas tank sound like a hiss for more then 3 or 4 seconds when you turn the ignition switch to ON . You can also look inside the tank when the gas is very low for this problem. There should be NO gas sparying anywhere inside the tank .
