Default Fuel line filter

Ive been having some bad idling, to a point it doesn't idle at all, it's backfiring and missing like a automobile will run when it has a coil pack not working. I have a '06 Sportster 1200 and I've done everything that I know to help it, but still better. I got in on it today and I've came along a fuel line with a filter that is stopped up. The line doesnt run to anything, but I think it's intention is to allow air into the tank , so gas can flow easily into the carbeurator. When it stops up it forms a vapor lock inside the tank, blocking the gas flow that it needs to reach its peak of performance. "Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track or is the problem some where else?" I'm just begging for answers, this is my first Harley and I'm having a bad experience with it and I'm praying it'll get better, cause I really like the bike... thanks for your help

Remove plugged filter and see if it runs better, if it does then clean or replace said filter and ride on.

If if it doesn't help then back to square one.

Is it possibly your gas tank overflow/vent going to the vapor valve? There should be a small fitting under your tank for the overflow/vent. I just bought a dirtbike style tank vent and used a 3/4" piece of vacuum line and stuck it on that fitting.

Jammie, hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. You can check components for your bike on-line here, and I sugest you check the fuel tank page. You will see that your tank has a 'vapor valve' item #16, also a vacuum operated gas tank tap with a vacuum hose item #6.

I suggest you simply remove item #16 and see if your bike runs any better. That will enable your gas tank to breath freely, if it cannot at present. Let us know what you find.

manual lists it as a vapor valve but not as a filter. There is a filter inside the tank.

You don't mention the year of your bike. My 1991 CA model also had a small valve that shut off the float bowl overflow. It used vacuum to open the passage with a line "T'd" off the line to the VOES. If that one gets blocked the bike will run rough. I took all that **** off a long time ago.
