if you just change the air out there is no 'need' to change fueling
if you just change the air in there is no 'need' to change fueling
change them both then you will need to look at it.
But in reality you are better off starting with the fueling and adding to that, a FP3 on a stock bike will make it run cooler to start with.
SO shortshots are ok but I would look to make your fueling your next modification
If you put vh short shots on the bike you NEED to do a stage 1 which would include a high flow air cleaner and a tune. You'll have to buy a hd street tuner and they'll hook the bike up to digital tech and put a base tune for a stage 1 upgrade in the bike.
If you put only slip ons on the bike, I recommend python 3 made by vh you don't need to re tune the bike. In fact you could do it on your own and save a ton of money. Literally pull the stock mufflers off and slip the new mufflers on.
If you're looking for sound and not performance just go with slip ons.
If your bike is stock and you put on the short shots but leave the intake stock you will need a tune, this is because you are getting rid of the cat in the stock muffs, if you were just putting slip ons on and leaving the intake alone then no you dont need a tune. The fact that the cat is being removed is the reason you need a tune after the "full" exhaust install. Rob
You're going to lose a bit of bottom end which may make the bike lug more in the lower rpm range. This was VERY annoying for me when I had my SSs. Also they are LOUD! Sounds great but I was woozy after rides.
I've since removed them. So that's how I feel about short open pipes...
Anything you do to the exhaust, be it slip-ons or full system, you DO NOT need a stage 1 download or any other sort of tuning. YES V&H does recommend to use the FP3 when you install their exhaust. Not knocking the brand or product, they're both great but there is NO NEED for tuning when only changing the exhaust.
If you do ANYTHING to improve the Air Intake, then you NEED to do a Stage 1 download or some sort of tuning. If you do not plan on making any further engine upgrades and you really don't want to mess around with mapping, then a 1 time Harley-Davidson Stage 1 Download will be more than enough to get you by with a high flow intake and exhaust (No you do not need a Screamin Eagle Tuner for the download)
If you are still under factory or extended warranty then I highly suggest you consider using Harley-Davidson exhaust and or tuner because any aftermarket parts can/will void your warranty.
So to answer your question directly, NO you DO NOT need to do anything else to your bike if you install Short Shots.
