I had the same issue and I ended up fixing it originally with a FuelMoto EFI Micro EFI tuner and then eventually moved on to something else once I changed the intake and exhaust. One thing that nobody seems to mention (but many are guilty of) is that when they sell their bikes, they remove all the after market parts and put the stock ones back on. They can get more money selling the after market parts online. However, nobody seems to remap their bike or care especially on a trade in. So the bike runs like crap. When we buy the bike, everybody goes under the assumption that since it has factory parts on it, nothing was ever done to the bike.
Hi I to have a 2007 sportster with just over 8400 miles first Harley. It was stock when I bought it in April my bike also lunked and sputtered while pulling out you had to give quite a bit of gas to get going all my other bikes I've owned you could pull out at an idol. My sportster would jerk and sputter threw the gears unless you were given it hell I since have installed V&H straight shot slip on mufflers V&H c o 2 air cleaner and V&H FP3 fuel tuner. WOW what a difference the bike will now pull out from a stop easily at a idol runs smoothly through the gears and while going along in 5th gear will have a quick throttle response with no lugging or sputtering and will cruise and run smooth from 40mph right up to 80 in 5th gear and in the lower gears runs & cruises smoothly at any speed now 10mph 20mph 30 mph If you can setup your sportster with aftermarket parts like I have it will fix the sputtering lugging lurching problem many of us seem to have it's like rideing a different motorcycle then before the upgrades Safe travels to all
Welcome to the genuis of HD and the Sportsters unique dual fire ignition setup. Meaning the front and rear cylinder fire at the same time all the time. This means on the front cylinders ignition stroke the rear is also firing on its intake stroke for something like 38*
you can smooth that out with a single fire ignition system with digital timing like one from Dynatec or whatever the name. Keep in mind dual fire is not MSD.
the twin cam motors use single fire and that is why they are so smooth compared to the sporty motor.
do a little digging on sportster ignition, dual fire vs single fire.
and I agree with the guy whonsaid a tune helps. I have the Race Tuner HD doesnt sell anymore on my bike and it wakes it up a ton. Helps with the lugging and shaking. Not 100% but better
