I got the new Custom sportster 1200 this year and on the odd occasion it over rev's like crazy on start up, it only seems to happen when the engine has had a good run and been turned off for a short time,
When it does happen I hit the kill switch Then turn on and everything is normal on start up... When I turn off the bike the idle speed is normal So I don't think its to do with sticking cable,
The only thing I did to the bike is put Oxford heated grips on, Any idea's folk's on what could be causing this issue.

My 2014 XL1200cp 'over revs' too under similar conditions. But 'over revs' is a relative term. Mine might rev up to 2500 briefly but always returns to 1200-1300 quickly . . . then settles down to 1000.
Hi dwood
Thank you for your reply,
Just went and started it up now and it just about hit 1900 then calmed down to 1300 Which is about normal for it, But when it over rev's it's much much higher... I never checked how high it rev's because I hit the kill as fast as I can, it's as if I had the throttle wide open on start up.
Ps, it does calm down like yours to 1000, But wont do that when it over rev's... It just screams at me till I kill it
all harleys have high rpms on start up. they jump up then drop down to 1200ish then slowly down 1000-950 its completely normal. especially sportsters. i notice this daily. i work in these things for a living at a dealer.
Your cables may just need a good cleaning. Maybe the throttle is open when you hit the start button. Been there done that.
Clean cables real good with brake cleaner then use "Cable Lube" to slick them up.
Do you turn the engine off with the Run / Stop switch?
If you turn the key off with the run / stop switch ON the IAC, Idle Air Control valve, may not reset properly.
The IAC controls the air to the engine with the throttle closed.
If the bike is new, it could be your throttle cables need to be adjusted.
Make sure the throttle return cable is set into the housing and has not caught on the outside,
holding the throttle open a little.
also the throttle/idle cables may be misadjusted. when they come in off the truck at delivery sometimes they are all messed up and revs really high
I will try adjusting the idle cable first then look into Shanneba's post below, thank you for your reply's Sorensentyler

Hi Shanneba
This one just has the fob So that rules out the key problem, But you very well could be right about the cable riding on top of the housing rather than in the slot of the new heated grips I fitted,
Apache Snow mentioned that the newer cables are Teflon lined which has me thinking that they may be slightly thicker than the norm which could cause them to ride on the ridge's of the oxford grip slot,
Thank you all for the helpful info... It's way too nice 'weather wise' to start taking things apart So I will take her for a run down the coast after adjusting the cable slack, I will for sure take the grip off to check the cable is seated properly when I get more time,
Hi, my bike all of a sudden would sit at 3K rpm and slowly fall back to 950. I changed the idle speed control valve and made no difference. Yesterday it revved to 5k while riding it and it would not drop (scary stuff). If you block off the drilling that goes to the ISCV it would cut out. So its getting unmetered air through the ISCV with the butterfly's fully closed. I'm thinking its not getting the correct signal from the ECU, via a wiring fault or a duff ECU. Anyone else had this issue? Thanks.
