Default Whats up from NC

whats up everyone. new to the site and new to harleys in general. ive been into motocross a long time and work as a tech in a honda/yamaha/ktm dealer. ive ridden a few sportsters recently and gotten the itch to get one. while i was originally thinking id get something newer ive come across an old family-friend that has an '88 sportster he needs to get rid of and just told me to make an offer. looking for some advice on what kind of offer to make. its an '88 1200 and its been sitting since october 2016. tires/chain/sprockets/brakes all looked to be in decent shape. biggest issue is last time the bike was ridden he said it was difficult to shift gears and soon after it was parked it puked a bunch of oil. he thinks the oil leak came from a crack in the oil tank and the shifting issue caused by a worn out clutch(i actually think the shifting issue will turn out to be something transmission related. yay for the trap door!) so, any suggestions on what kind of offer i should make?

With that many issues honestly I wouldn’t offer more than 1000-1500$.

Welcome to the forum! It appears from your post you enjoy wrenching. That's a good thing, cause you'll be doing some wrenching. I enjoy it myself. I have been browsing CL looking for an older Sporty myself to have a project bike, it seems you might have found yours.

You said it was an old family-friend. I'd try to get the "old family-friend" discount...

If it were me, I'd ask to spend a little time with it for free. If you can figure out exactly what's wrong with the shifting and where the oil's actually coming from, you'll either feel much better about buying it, or know that it isn't worth your time. Worse case scenario, your friend gets some free diagnostic work.

Edit to add: And welcome from Elm City, NC!
