09 xl833ll bought new 44,000 miles at random not every ride engine and battery light come on battery good by dealer check dealer did not find the issue say wiring ok charging ok could throw new regulator on for $200 hard to fix because this is interrnitant issue. any thoughts would be great. thanks.
I had a similar issue not long ago. It happened most frequently when the bike was in stop and go traffic and when sitting at a light. This pointed me to the charging system. I tested everything. The charging system seemed to be fine. I checked the stator output, the battery was brand new, regulator seemed to test fine under load and at idle. I even went to great lengths to make sure all connections were tight and had a good amount of dielectric grease on them.
Well, long story short, I replaced the regulator with a Cycle Electric unit and my problem disappeared. The regulator seemedfine when running charging tests at idle, but once I was moving and the bike was hot, it was crapping out. The stock unit isn't very good. Cycle Electric makes a quality replacement.
Start simple. Check connections at all terminals and make sure they're tight, especially at the battery ground on the frame. If that doesn't fix your problem, I would say to test the stator or regulator. In my case, it was a deceiving regulator.

Adding on to BlackBetty. If all the connections are tight, and there are no broken wires, the most likely component to be intermittent is the regulator.
