Default Oil change.

To change the oil on this 2015, the manual only says to drain the tank. What about the oil in the engine sump? Shouldn't that be changed as well? I understand that there is only a minimal amount in there but it is dirty.

No just run the engine to get it hot and get all the oil back in the tank and you will be fine. Usually takes 2.8 quarts. Get it half way up the dip stick between add and full. People been doing it like this for years with no ill effects. One on here has over 200,000 on his bike.

There's probably <8oz of oil in the sump if you run the motor before changing like you're supposed to. Not worth the very common scenario of cracking the block when you pull the no-touch plug.

Been working on them since the 1960's. What the manual says. There is a filter on the oil, so it basically is just stained. Just drain the bag and refill. There is no filter on the other, so since you are doing it yourself and all the cost is couple quarts of fluid, it could be a little benefit in draining all the holes. Do it after you have driven it may just bring out some metal crud. (if not, it usually settles to the bottom and stays there) Do not flush or any other silliness. There are numerous pockets and such to catch wrong fluids. On the cruisers, the actual sump drain is an NPT pipe plug used to check for sumping. It needs to be resealed with a special pipe sealant and carefully snugged up. Overtighten will split the casting causing $5K repair bills.

Thanks for all the help. Hopefully in a couple of days we can finish up this Scrambler Project that my son is doing. It sure doesn't look anything like what we started with!

206,000 miles on my 06 Sporty before I killed the engine. Changed oil at 5K as recommended in the manual and did nothing special. I was running SYN3 synthetic oil since about 20K

There is no sump as such, although your engine will retain some oil in its many nooks and crannies. As already suggested, change as per your manual. That's worked just fine for me on my various Harleys for over 40 years!
