I've just logged my first 1000 miles on my new Sportster 1200 Low and I'm not scheduled to get in for my first service until July 12th because they were booked solid. I was wondering, is it okay to go a little over on the miles while I await my first service appointment? I don't see anywhere in writing where it will void my warranty or anything and the bike seems to be broke in and running just fine. All input would be seriously appreciated.
Hey Andrew,
what was your break in procedure? Did you keep it under a certain mph for a certain amount of miles etc? I'm curious because at the moment i'm in the break in period for my sportie. thanks
I'l in the same boat as you...mine is the 13th....The guy at the service said it can have as much as 1800 when it comes in...they don't expect us to stop riding them because they hit 1k......
Just remember, you will collect more metal particles in your oil during the first 500 miles than you likely will in the next 50,000. So, any extended operation with the "breakin oil" ain't doing your bike any favors. I dump & change the oil at 500 & again at the 1000 mile service.
I just took mine in on wednesday. It had 1400 miles on it. I am still waiting upon its return. I asked why set up an appointment if I have to wait several days?

WTF? It doesn't take 2-3 days to do a 1000 mile service. I think mine only took an hour or two, but it's hard to remember one service that happened 7yrs ago. I know I didn't leave mine overnight! I'd demand it back ASAP, if it were me.
I don't get it. It takes nothing more than a few basic tools to change your own oil. Maybe a drain pan & cup type socket to fit the end of the filter, both from any auto parts store for a total of $10. Why would anyone risk abusing the motor by running over 1000 miles with all the breakin shavings in the oil?
Change the oil yourself ON TIME. Take the bike in later if you need to for the rest of the 1K service.
The first oil change is the most important oil change you will ever make on your bike.
