Default Engine Spits..

After my Sportster 883 warms up when I begin to apply throttle from a stop the engine bogs a bit then spits thru the carb.If I run with the choke on and the idle up just a bit this does not occur.Theres been no sign of the check engine light coming on.Anyone have any ideas on this? its an '05 model with carb, only mod"s are drag pipes and h.p. wires..this is a new occurance so dont think they are to blame.

The symtoms are indicative of a lean A/F ratio and a vacuum leak is a good place to start.

Actually, I notice my bike does this when I ride it when it's cold out. Doesn't happen when I ride during the 70+ degree days, only the 50 and lower nights... I have pipes, hi-flow, and a rejet, and I think it's probably related to a/f mix...

I agree with cHarley - sounds like a lean running condition. If it just started happening, I'd look for an air leak...

If your idle is not high enough, you will also get this condition.

I spoke with a mechanic at a shop that I trust about my problem (spitting on accel or at takeoff on cold nights), and he said that it is possible that I'm not letting the engine warm up enough before I take off. He also said that if I ride too much with the gear too high (not keeping the engine RPMs up enough), that the motor is cooling off too much at night when it's cold out.

He also explained to me that bikes aren't like cars (which I already knew, but)... Bikes want to cruise in the 2-3000 RPM range, unlike cars that want to cruise at 1500RPMs...

Last night I tested the theory, and kept the bike in one gear lower than I normally would. It kept the motor higher than I would have liked (not close to redline, but still higher than I would have liked), and mine didn't spit or sputter at all all night...

I DO wish the sportster came with a Tach, so I would be able to tell you where the "sweet spot" is, but it doesn't, and I'm not willing to spend the $600+ to put one in...

Every bike should come with a tach. I'd be lost without mine. I look at it more than the speedometer, and I drive by it. After a while, the correlationbetween speed and rpm's becomes second nature and the speedometer gets looked at mostly as an odometer gas guage.

Glad to hear you're running better...

I remember seeing a little aftermarket digital tach posted on here a week or two ago. It seemed rather decent and blended into the handlebar assembly to where almost un-noticable. It also wasn't very expensive.
