Default Reading Plugs??

I changed my Spark plugs a few days ago, and they told me what I already suspected. The bike was running a bit too rich. So, I did just a quick adjustment to get it a bit more lean. Reading plugs is a new thing for me. How many miles would I need to ride before I could pull them and get a good reading on my adjustment?

I searched in the Tech forum area for this, but didn't really find the answer.

Did you tell him about "Throttle Chopping" to read his plugs? I have never seen it mention on this forum, but that's the way I've always checked my metric. Just curious.

Yep, that's part of the discussion. It's just easier to explain the process "live" than going through all the possible sceneros here with simplistic instructions. Reading plugs today just isn't as easy as it was back in the day of leaded fuel.

You can also try the sportster homepage for alot of useful info. They have some very good carb info there.

I'm from the school of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". If you were running rich, then you would have had some symptoms of it. In my opinion, we should all be running a little rich. If the bike starts easy, if it is not spitting, idling poorly, if your mileage is satisfactory,if you have good throttle response in all the ranges then, you were probably OK. The point is, a "little" rich. The mere fact that you changed the plugs should have done all of the above without any other changes. The best way to absolutly know is to put it on a dyno. Be careful in making changes after putting in new plugs. Ride it for awhile first.
