Default Impressed with Sportster's Strength

You may have read in the "So what did you do to your Sportster today" thread that I had the misfortune of being in a accident on Black Friday. Unfortunately, wearing a neon yellow riding jacket with body armor and a neon yellow modular helmet along with Custom Dynamics Triple-Play Rear Brake Module will keep you safe from a teenager texting behind the wheel of mom's minivan. With both feet on the ground and waiting for traffic to move I got rear ended and thrown off my bike about 8-10 feet away. The ER doctor told me to stay off my feet and not to go into work till at least Wednesday. Even with taking prescribed muscle relaxers and pain meds my loving wife knew I would not sit still until I went to the wrecking yard to check out my Harley. I was beside myself because I knew the damage to the minivan and expected the worse to my beloved Sportster as it laid in the street as I was loaded into the ambulance. First a big thanks to the owner/driver of the flatbed that picked it up, he too is a Harley rider and as he put it "this Sportster was too nice to be kept outside in the yard" so he locked it up in his garage along with his trucks and said it would stay there till the insurance company had it picked up. I expected the side that was face down to be a mess - figured the gas tank, exhaust pipes, shock, and the mustang wide solo seat all to scratched, dented and road rashed. The all steel fender took the biggest hit along with the steel wheel being bent. Having installed the factory crash bar saved the whole side of the bike, there was not a hint of road contact on any of the components. Granted it's not been towed over to the HD dealership yet which further evaluation might reveal a bent swing arm, etc, etc...But, I have to say that I'm impressed with how well the Sportster held up against a Chrysler Town & Country minivan.

Glad to read you're up and about. Surprisingly the bike doesn't look too bad, hope there is no hidden damage found and it can be repaired.

Read you're other post.

These pics don't look like as bad as it could have been. Engine guard saved a lot!

Good to see you up and about!

Wow, glad you are ok. The big thing is if there is any frame damage. If so, HD will want the frame replaced as they don't repair them and that could be what totals the bike. Being that it is a 2017 there is a chance it may not be if there isn't too much other damage

Good luck!

I too read up in the other thread about your accident. I'm glad of course that you walked away without too many bruises and i hope your bike survives as well.
