I have a question for sporster people. My wife is picking up forword controls for her sporster and I will be installing them today. Thought it would be a stright forword thing but I got some instructions off the internet that says that I have to remove the whole exhaust systen to install them? I realy dont want to do this with all the heat sensors and a ton of other crap they put on the new bikes. Is it possible to do this without removing the exhaust system. She has an 07 883 low. I realy dont want to take it to the stealership to have it done but I also dont want to take the bike apart just to install forword controls. Any help on this subjuct would be great. Thanks
I did the forward controls on my sporty about a month ago. I did have to remove the front exhaust pipe from the bike to remove the right side mid control bracket. It is not difficult, it only takes like 10 minutes to get the exhaust off. Just loosen the clamps for the shields, remove the two bolts under the mufflers, remove the two head bolts and she is off. You will also want them off to get better access to the rear brake lever.
I know it sucks but it is really simple. I had the whole thing done in an hour.
Oh yeah I did have to bore out the hole that attaches to the shift shaft (or whatever you call it) mine would not fit and I had the hd chrome controls.
When I did my 06 1200L, I moved the exhaust a bit just to get the mounting bolts off, you do not have to remove the whole exhaust to get room. The hardest part is to take the shifter peg off, good vise grip and towel will do, other than that piece of cake. I recommend you to remove the shift peg while it is on the bike, wrap a towel around the rubber and loosen it with vise grip.
Hubby (Catfish) says thanks ... he's working on it now, and no cursing (yet).
When I picked up the controls at the dealer and asked how much it would cost to have THEM install them if Catfish couldn't, they said an estimated 2 hours, which would be at least $140.00, so he's figuring it may be a pain in the ***, but beats paying the stealership.

Something to think about my son has forward controls and on long rides there is no other position to move into. We put the mid mount brackets back on the bike and that gives him another seating option. you have to grind out the right side bracket so the brake rod will slide but it only took about 30 min to fix enjoy your bike .As far as the cussing pretend you are playing the home edition of American Chopper.LOL
Yeah, actually a friend of ours suggested perhaps we could do just that .. keep the mid brackets on ... we're not sure that would work but I'll pass your comments on to Catfish, (who isn't cussing at the moment).
