Default Forward Controls Install Helps

OK. So I have the harley forward controls, trying to put them on my 2011 883 Iron. I got the shifter side done no problem. The problem is the brake side. I cant seem to break the torn bolt free that holds the brake arm at the very back of the bike. Its so tight in there I can only fit a small drill bit on it and trying to turn it with a baby wrench. Any advice on how to get it off?

The install instructions say to remove the exhaust... Is this 100% necessary?

I just installed forwards on my Nightster and I had to remove the front exhaust pipe. Probably the same with yours. No big deal. But you'll need to pick up a new exhaust gasket from HD for the reinstall.

100% no, but I'd seriously recommend it. You need to get a torque wrench in there putting everything back together if you're gonna do it right. Plus it really makes the job that much easier to have that muffler out of the way.

Nope. Don't remove the header. All you need to remove is the heat shield and the forward slip on muffler. Mine was on there tight (yes I removed the bolt :P ), but a little persuasion and it comes off. (assuming stock pipes.)

I tried using a cheaper set of L-shaped torx wrenches and the tip broke off the tool. Everything's gotta be a pita. The sets above, by Wiha, have performed well. I didn't need to remove the exhaust, only required loosening the front muffler's mount so the muffler would pivot out of the way a little. I didn't put new gaskets in, either, but it's always a good idea if you take it apart.
Don't forget Loctite during re-assembly. I used purple, low strength, iirc. Usually, I'd use a torque wrench. For this application, I went with hand-feel. Remember, it's your brakes. If in doubt, remove the muffler and get a torx socket on a torque wrench.

What do you mean by a small drill bit on it?

get yourself a good set of Torx sockets. and a long rachet. You will need the leverage to break it loose. I remember it being tough when I installed forwards on mine.

Its been a couple years, but I recall there being some sort of thread locker on there and it was torqued to 110 pounds.

I meant a small torx bit out of a Dewalt box of bits I got for my drill... Not an actual drill bit.
