Default Forward control install questions

I have a 99 custom 1200 and of course it already has the factory forward controls installed.I want to put on new chrome controls from Drag Specialties with new HD diamondplate footpegs. The left side looks like a piece of cake. The right side has got me thinking. The directions say to remove the exhaust system. Is that because it will make the job easier or can I leave the exhaust on and make it a little harder? Can I remove all the bolts and nuts I need to without the exhaust removal headache?Sprocket cover needs to be removed? How about the rear master cylinder?Or should I just pay the indy HD mechanic 2 blocks from my work to do it?By the way,it seems most things I try to do myself turn into projects.Don't need that, but this job seems too easy to pay someone for. Thanks for the advice in advance!

What you have to do is look at the exhaust, if they sit on top of your forward control bracket and brake push rod bolts, loosen them and move them a bit. If you can remove all the bolts without touching the exhaust, why not just leave them? When I changed my mid control to forward control, I have loosened one of the muffler so I can remove the rear brake master cylinder push rod bolt, other than that, it was a quick installation. Why pay someone to do the job when you can do it? Make sense? Alex [8D]

Yes,it makes sense Alex.I'll have to go check it out a little closer before I start anything. It looks so easy, but Murphy's Law has kicked my *** plenty of times and I lose patience quickly! Thanks for the input.Thats what I was looking for,a little direction. This is my first Harley and I don't won't to screw it up and end up costing me more money.By the way,I love what you have done with your Low.It looks awesome!

Default RE: Forward control install questions

I recently changed my mid controls to forward controls and it was pretty simple. It was time consuming due to the many parts, but not very hard at all. I had to take my exhaust off to get to the bolt to remove the mid control, I don't think you will have to since you have forward controls already. It probably just includes that step for those of use who did not have forward controls. Just keep a jack under the motor because you will be removing the motor mounts in order to install the new fwd controls.

As long as you know how to turn a wrench and follow the directions included, you should be able to save yourself about a $200 installation job.
