If it's aftermarket, it very well could be the chrome/metal....poor quality.

If it is HD, then I would say a neglected bike.

ACF50 is your friend along with adequate care and attention to detail before neglecting your bike in a garage for weeks on end. Decay does not happen overnight.

It looks very odd indeed. The pitting can be seen to match with what should be rubber in the clamp. That has to be a chemical reaction to something in the rubber if that is what it is in the clamps.

The fork tubes on my bike have witness marks where the clamps have been but they just wipe off.

Rust free.

So how come I've just purchased a 2004 Roadster that's totally rust free ? I actually got it from Portsmouth UK which is a sea port .

No, I do not live near any ocean or anywhere that would do this. I believed what happen was I throw a blanket over it and through the winter
it got moisture in condemnation on cheap metal it will rot

It all depends, each coastal environment has varying levels of chloride in the local atmosphere. At least that's what I remember from an oceanography class.
