Default Bearing change from 3/4 " to 1 inch

I own a 2007 sportster custom with the rear wheel that takes a 1 inch bearing and axle. I found a really cheap rear wheel from a 2001 sportster however it has a 3/4 inch bearing and axle. Is it possible to just change the bearings only without any other work. They are both cast wheels. Was wondering if Harley would carry a bearing that would do the job. Thanks in advance as I couldn't find any threads on it.

Wink

Wheels from that year range will take 3/4", 1" and also 25mm bearings. I have a Softail rear wheel on my Glide which I changed from 3/4" to 1", also a later SG front wheel which I have changed from 25mm to 1". In both cases I used a set of Harley bearings which come with the correct internal spacer etc. Check the H-D website and the Shop tab, where you should find details of the bearing kits you need.

Thanks GRBROWN for the information. I guess can work for most wheels. Gives me some more options.

Bore the Hub on your 3/4" wheel

All of the sealed ball bearings that Harley uses in their wheels (3/4", 1" and 25mm) are all the exact same OD and height/depth. The only variable between these bearings is the ID.

To modify a wheel that was originally 3/4" to now accept 1" you will obviously need to remove the 3/4" bearings and replace them with 1" bearings.

Additionally, you will more than likely need to bore the hub of the wheel out a bit larger to accept the 1" spacer that sits in between the (2) wheel bearings.

In the opposite scenario (modifying a wheel that was originally 1" to now accept 3/4") after you replace the bearings with the appropriate size I'd recommend using a 3/4" spacer INSIDE of a 1" spacer (used in tandem) in order to choke down on the oversized 1" hub that you no longer need.

...
Not the same width ...
Factory Bearings:
21mm wide for the 3/4" & 1"
15mm & 18mm wide for the 25mm STD & ABS

My bad, you are correct about the 25mm bearings. With that being said, 3/4" and 1" are perfectly interchangeable.
