Check the ground stud on the transmission case. It came loose on my wife's Sporty. I was thinking it was just the nut, but the actual stud was loose to. I would tighten the nut down and a couple of rides later It would shut off or not start.
Normally when all power shuts off, it is an indication of a grounding issue. As some have suggested, redo the cable connections at the battery and frame. use dielectrical grease to seal connection from corrosion including your fuses.
Well....it is an indication of a bad connection, be it positive or negative, both are equally important, and either one is likely.
Sportsters are notorious for having bad connections at the battery cables, if not installed following the service manual to the letter...
True...could be either if at the battery. Could also be main fuse. However, if not bad connections at the battery, it is more likely the negative if everything turns off.
A really good mod on any Harley which has been around for many passing moons is to add another earth strap directly from negative battery pole directly down to the starter body itself, probably best onto the top fixing bolt just make sure all the contact area's are clean and greased prior to fitting.
That way the circuit to the starter is direct, instead of going around the system trying to find the shortest route.
It's something I've been doing for years, costs very little and it works.....................
Having said all that I've still to do it on my 2018 48 Special...
