A "stage one" upgrade is 3 components, tune (or jets on carbed bikes), free flowing intake, and free flowing exhaust. You can safely do 1 without the other 2, but if you do 2 you must do 3. You said you had a stage one upgrade, but you also said you were running oem exhaust; if by oem you meant stock and not screaming eagle, you just identified what's holding you back.
So in other words, you can't do a Stage 1 and expect performance without changing to screamin' eagle or aftermarket slipons to feel the upgrade...is that correct? Screamin' Eagles don't really give you much of a rumble though, but because of the 80db limit, not much choice in CA.

Without doing all 3 components, you won't get improved performance.
Bummer so I got talked into a Stage 1 that's meaningless without the exhaust. Bummer. Thanks for the info. That's more than I got at Harley service. My fault for not doing homework on this first before deciding. Like always, lesson learned the hard way.

You can order any exhaust you want and have it shipped to you . They just specify not for street use in California but they dont know what your doing with it .

Should have bought a bike manufactured before January 1, 2013 when the noise law went into effect. Any bike manufactured after that, you need a DOT stamp.
My state requires baffles so I got the largest diameter baffles available for the muffs to be legal but it was loud.....those who run without baffles just install them when they go for inspection. We have noise laws too but cops here normally do not cite for noise and inspection stations pass the pipes as long as they have baffles with no regard for noise.
I have an 18 Sportster XL1200XS. Just did a Stage 1 but still feels held back. What can I do to give it a little more power? I've been told get aftermarket slipons but I'm in CA and can't get V&H or any other slipons over 80db. What are your thoughts...
Nothing over 80 dB? The stock exhaust is probably over that if you really get on it. Crazy law
