Default Do you guys ever split lanes?

Here in CA it's legal to split lanes. I found myself doing it a lot when i rode sport bikes. I'm only 120 miles deep into my first harley. Do you guys ever split lanes/go in between cars? Is it a bad idea? I go to the front of the pack by riding between cars when cagers are stopped at a light. But more and more i find myself tempted to ride between and past cars while moving in lanes, due to the insane amount of traffic in los angeles. Thoughts?

The idea of sticking myself in between two cars just doesn't appeal to me.

I too ride throughout Southern California. I have split lanes, but do so rarely. I will do it only in VERY slow traffic, usually backing up due to an accident.

Keep in mind that in traffic, the other drivers get frustrated and switch lanes suddenly, and they are NOT watching out for you.

At least 2 or 3 times a week I hear traffic reports where a motorcyclist is "down"....I would bet a lot of dollars that 90+% of those were splitting.

Drive defensive!

Not legal here in Canada so I can't say one way or the other but is sure sounds spooky to me, I don't think I'd do it even if it was legal unless the traffic was completly stopped and no one can suddenly change lanesin front ofme.
Maybe it's something you get used to but I have enough trouble with cagers when we each have our own lane let alone sharing one!

Not unless trafic has died and then I will only go down the shoulder of the road. With my luck some cagger would open a door or something. Not too safe to me.

Only time I split lans is if traffic is at a stop (red lights, traffic jam) Don't have any desire to make the front page of the local obituaries

i've thought about it, but have never done it. I did once ride on the shoulder for about a mile because traffic was so backed up due to construction.

It's illegal to do that in PA, but I wouldn't do it. I'd be very uncomfortable driving very close between tow cars, trucks, etc. I have a brother who lives in CA and was out there when I sawlane splitting for the first time. I was waiting for someone to open their car door while the bikes were riding in between them....
