Default Clip on installation

Hi there,

today I received my RSD Clip-ons. What way should I go to install them? I have no bike lift.

What I saw, there are basically two options:

a) leave the bike on the ground, loosen up the fork tubes on the upper triple clamp, take off the steering bolt and lift off the triple clamp to put in the clip ons.
b) lift the bike with car jack one sided onto the side stand, loose the fork bolts on upper und lower triple clamp, pull down forks and put in the clip ons.

What do you suggest the easiest way? Sort of worried with the car jack if I am willing to get the wheel high enough without sh**ing my pants. I will change my speedo etc. so I will need to dismantle my top fork anyhow.

Many thanks, Tom

Without a lift or decent jack it's a bit tricky. Maybe jack enough to remove front wheel then you have heaps of room to lower your fork tube through the trees

That could be easy if Sportster had a central stand.

With no means to support the weight of the bike it looks like (a) is your only option.

If your car jack is a scissor type then you could put a board under the frame near the front of the engine and jack up the bike that way but if it looses its balance you are going to be in trouble.

If it is a trolley jack with a biggish round disc on top that will be okay with the wood board. Then you would just loosen all the yoke bolts and pull the fork tubes down.

You might want to consider something like this

Not a lot of money and very useful for small jobs like yours.

Many thanks for the feedback. Will try tomorrow option (a) and report. Do I need to take care of any alignment issues if I don’t touch the lower Triple? I took look at some older service manuales which I found, next to the fork pipes bolts and the nut there is also a cross bold on the stem but, right? That need to be removed, correct?

Hi,

anyone interested, option A is perfect, after removing speedo, raisers, etc. y loosened up the 3+1 bolts and the triple clamp came off super smoothly. Clip ons slided-in the same way. Don´t hassle getting the bike up, removing the wheel or similar.

Good stuff. I wouldn't remove the wheel either as that keeps the forks even
