Default V&H Baffles question

Hey guys, I'm new here and am learning a bunch. Thanks for all the info. I just bought an'08 Sportster 1200 Custom andit should be delivered in October.

Question: I'm looking into eventually purchasing the V&H Shortshots forthe '08 Sportster. Do I really need the baffles?? According to the V&H website, they "do not recommend the removal of the baffles due to the large loss in torque and midrange you will experience."

Is this really true?? Looking for anyone else's experience with baffles removed or baffles installed with the Shortshots. I'm concerned I'll have a quiet Harley with the quiet baffles installed, and hey, Harleys are made to be noticed!

i have vance and hines straight shots, got the bike with the baffles removed. Bike ran too lean, backfired alot when decelerating, and basically to me sounded too raspy, with no low tones to it.

I went out and bought baffles for my pipes, the loudness is still there, but now my bike runs just about right, does not backfire and it mellowed out the raspy tone so they are a bit deeper, in my opinion seems a bit louder in sense that now it sounds more like a harley, before it sounded like a chopper. So dont worry about the baffles, remove them if you want, or dont. Remove them and see how you like the sound, some say it will affect performance and it does, in different ways. Dont be worried that with baffles your harley will loose the "harley" sound, they will be quite loud enough believe me, i still set off car alarms in the parking garage when i go to start my bike up after work. Alot of people still think they are too loud with the normal baffles, so they buy the quiet baffles. In my opionion i would leave them in.

I tried my fatboy with them out on my pipes when they were new. the performance was better with them in and i think it sounds better. having said this i installed the se a/c and had the download done all at once. so performance would be better since the download figures for pipes with baffles. Vance and Hines according to my neighbors are loud enough with the baffles anyway.

Why would you want to remove the baffles?
Have you heard the shortshots in person? They are LOUD (with the baffles in). I listened to a lot of pipes before buying mine, and the shortshots were some of the loudest and definately the best sounding.

I could not be more agree!, EVEN with the quiet baffles of V&H (which I have), these pipes are really loud!

Don't take the baffles out, your asking for trouble with performance issues. They are loud enough with them in and are you sure the come with quiet baffles, I thought they were an option.

Thanks guys, nope never heard them in person but I'll take your words for it. I think you can buy the baffles seperately(?) which I may as well do. I called V&H and they said they have yet to test their Shortshots and FuelPak for the '08 models. Hopefully I can get 'em in October. I plan on the re-map too....not sure about FuelPak or PCIII. Thinking I'm leaning more towards FuelPak.
Again, thanks. I can't wait to actually be the owner of my own Harley. I've been renting too long!

dude I have tried with and without quiet baffles on my shortshots. The stock baffles were waaaay too loud. It probably doesn't help that the exhaust ends right below your ears. I have ran them with quiet baffles in both pipes and the sound was too muted. Still loud in volume but did not have a crisp sound. So I am running with one quiet baffle and one stock. I'm very happy.

I was confused about this when I bought them too. All shortshots come with baffles -- these are the stock baffles. They are LOUD. V&H sells optional "quiet" baffles as well ... I've never heard these because I like the way the stock baffles sound. Removing them and running no baffles is not a very good idea -- the motor needs some back pressure from the exhaust.

Not sure if you are interested, but Installed Vance and Hines Slip On's on my 07 1200 low, here is a link to check out the sound. This is with stock baffles in. I do not think you will want to take the baffles out. I am thinking of ordering the quiet baffles to have on hand.

The advantage of Slip On's is you do not have to make any other modifications if you do not wish to.
