The warranty is quite clear in the owners manual. It is up to you to take the risk or comply with the warranty standards. Do not blame Harley Davidson. It is an EPA rule and Harley Davidson has to comply per EPA guidelines.

I fully understand that. My issue is that If the rings were installed incorrectly or something unrelated to my risk of tuning the bike caused it, shouldnt they own their work quality? Its a cop out to say oh your warranty is void, even though we did something wrong. If my tuning the bike honestly even remotely contributed to the issue I could live with that. I honestly dont think thats the case though.
I don't think its a cop out. I seriously doubt ANY brand would honor their warranty with the mods you have. Owning a GM diesel truck that I bought used, with an extended warranty. The warranty stated very clearly ANY programming mods or engine mods not done at a GM dealer, would void the warranty.
HD and GM both know the likelyhood of us modifying our vehicles, and know the problems that can arise from those mods. The folks at V&H surely will not dover your repairs if their tune did wipe out the rings, so why should HD?
Sucks that a bike that new has this sort of issue, but they cannot be expected to cover what we change. There is a possibility, there is actually a cracked oil ring, and they may cover that. Hopefully they do, but be prepared.
I'm with the OP on this. How in the holy f@#ck is an air cleaner going to ruin the pistons? If Harley wants to keep on screwing their customers, and if you fanboys want to claim "It's not MoCo's fault because of the EPA...yadda yadda yadda. Read your warranty" than Harley should sell bikes without a warranty
No one said anything about the AC, the dealers comment was the tuner. All I am saying is they would be in their legal right to not cover it, but since the decision has not been made, there is no sense in badmouthing them.
Most likely they will see what the issue REALLY is and if the tuner is not at fault, then my guess is it will be covered.
I can understand disappointment in them if they did not cover it, but I would also understand it was a choice I had made knowing full well the possibility of this issue arising.
I bought my 48 back in September 2018 it was a 4-month old pre/demo bike with around 900..ish recorded miles, it came fitted with a S/E air cleaner, V&H short shots + V&H FP-3 tuner. They gave me a 2-year warranty from the day I purchased the bike and not from when it was originally registered for the road, so in therory I still have a little over 6-months of warranty left, although, in my case I don't really because the bike use to run like s**t and by changing out a few components it now runs really sweet, so a warranty claim now would probably be a no go, not that I care I do all my own work in any case.
At the time I questioned why they had fitted these parts to a demo bike and they said it was to attract potential customers to have a stage one kit fitted to their new bike at a pre- reduced price, after having road a demo bike with the kit already fitted, and apparently it was a good marketing move, which I assume other dealers probably do the same.
They also said because they supplied and fitted the kit it fully complied with-in the warranty guidelines....
The tuner is the issue. Has been covered many times, it really is not HD it is the EPA forcing HD not to cover it. HD was fined heavy and that was the agreement with the EPA. But the EPA has not gone after any other manufacture that I have heard of.
If that dealer installed FP3 is tuned within EPA and CARB limits, there should be no reason they could not offer a powertrain warranty. Perhaps the OP can inquire about having the dealer check the tune on his bike for potential compliance? After reading the warranty bulletin, it looks pretty cut and dried that the tune is checked (or should) for compliance.

Good luck.
yeah but with a diesel, a tune is increasing boost. That can grenade engines. Air fuel mixture isnt gonna ruin piston rings. My point is its VERY clear its NOT due to an air cleaner and tune. Rings are generally installed incorrectly when bad. Ive seen it on HD. Or cracked. I hear ya though and am mentally prepared. Its just annoying since I know my mods didnt cause it.
