Default Painting frame

Anyone painted a frame without removing the engine. I don’t have the patience time to remove the engine. If everyone says not to paint if I don’t remove it I’ll just leave it black.

but I think I could tape off and cover the engine and spray the frame. I know the bottom part of the frame will not be painted as it sits on the jack but no one can or will see that unless they’re laying down on the ground.

bike is already stripped of everything except the engine. I was doing frame modifications.

thoughts ?

I told him please never touch a spray can ever again, and to enroll in "Potato Prints 101" if he just had to paint something.

Seem to me there is a lot of the motor that hangs over the bottom part of the frame so I think it won't look very good after you are done painting it that way. Since, as you say, you have everything else stripped off the frame why not just remove the few motor mounts and pull the engine and do it right?

And if you do remove the engine you have the opportunity to get the frame blasted and powder coated . 90% of achieving a good paint job is in the surface preparation so trying to work around the engine is not a good idea .

Color change....I would remove the engine.

Touch up to area of your frame modification...possible.
Color match and blend.
Spray can of modified sections...well others may have done this, but I could echo "hack job" and may not look so good but you could try and re-do if a fail.

Good luck with your project.

I've done a few and the only way to get a quality job is to strip it down to the bare frame and do a proper prep and go from there. I personally powder coat all my frames. They look good and last a long time. I usually pay 175.00 to 225.00 a frame to blast and powder coat. I also do a black and silver hammer tone powder on all my frames. It goes with any color and gives a nice subtle change from a color matched or plain black frame.

Thanks for your advice everyone. Spoke to a local guy and he convinced me to tip the bike over and pull the frame off. Will be getting it powder coated.
