I’ve got a 2018 883 Iron with about 11,000 miles. I recently put a K&N filter on it. I like the stock look so it was just a replacement filter, not a wazoo upgrade.
Recently on hard deceleration I can hear a gravelly sound come from the front end. I cant make out where exactly, maybe the front exhaust or the front axle. It sounds like a couple rocks rolling over metal.
It only happens between 10-25 mph on medium to hard braking. Rotors are within spec and pads are still good for a couple more thousand. The tires look good. No other indications of anything wrong with the bike. Could that be decel popping? Or do you think it might be bearings? I don’t want to stop riding to take the front end apart. I know me and it won’t stop at bearings, I’ll end up working on the bike for a month and taking everything else apart to upgrade, “while I’m in there.” Lol

stone embedded in a caliper ?
Have you checked the Primary Chain tension recently ?
Predetination? ie: gas rattle. Do you run premium? You changed the air side, have you also changed the exhaust as well? Without a re-tune that could be what you are hearing?

yeah I only run 91 or higher. The exhaust is stock. Do I really need a re-tune for an air filter only?
If you think it is the bearings, better to check them before they stop your riding in a bad way. Takes at most 30 minutes to jack the bike up, pull the front axle and put you finger in and check the smoothness of the bearings. Do you wash the bike at a pressurized car wash or with a power washer?
As you say it happens while braking, you can pull the caliper at the same time, check the pads and look for foreign matter.
If it didn't do it before the air change and now it does, I'd say it has something to do with it. Put the stock filter back in and see if it goes away. It's always been said that if you change the air, yes. If its gonna take more air in, it needs to get out. But never seen the intake being done without the exhaust. Maybe someone that has done that will have the answer because I don't.
You don't get that much improvement over stock filter with a K&N filter. Disregarding what marketing says. LOL ECM still maintains the proper air fuel ratio.
So I rode it up the hill yesterday. I didn’t hear the noise because there was no need for heavy braking. I put it on a stand, but could find anything wrong without taking the front tire off.
If I do remove the axle and tire, do I need to re align the front tire?

If you do not have a HD field service manual, you should stop right now and take it to a dealer or independent motorcycle mechanic that knows what they are doing. On offense meant.
Since it happens on decel and under braking, it is probably not detonation. Could it be the floating rotor making noise? They do rattle around a bit, particularly when hard on the brakes. It would be worth your while to check the bearings as stated. You won't need to align your tire, but it will need to be put together correctly. As coolbreeze said, if you doubt your ability and don't have a factory service manual, seek some help on this.
