Default 2003 Sportster 1200 Carburetor backfire

I bought this 2003 Sportster 1200 and runs great when warmed up. When I initially start it and throttle it, it makes a pop noise in the carburetor when stationary. The noise eventually disappear after riding and the bike is warmed up. I took out the carburetor today and adjusted the fuel/air screw to give it more gas (1 and 3/4 counter clockwise from the close position) but the noise is still there. Do you think I should get the carburetor rebuilt or bigger jets? It has screaming eagle pipes on the bike currently and no other mods.

Do you pull the choke (enrichener) on cold starts? If not, that's where the carb farts are coming from, since it runs good when warmed up.

I pull the choke and carb still backfires / pops when cold. After riding around, it stops popping.

Recommended procedure in cold weather is to ride two miles on full enrichener and another two miles with it halfway in . Personally I've always regarded this to a bit excessive but that's what the Owners Manual says . Mine's an 04 XL 1200 Roadster .

Just for you I decided to knock my choke off early on a chilly start this morning and sure enough I replicated the symptoms that you described . I guess it should be born in mind that with it's huge cooling fins ( Mine are bigger than yours I believe ) and external oil tank , a Sportster will take time to warm up especially on a cold day . I still think that HD's recommendation of 2 miles on full choke and 2 miles on half choke is somewhat over the top but there you go .

I was going to add the other day that it is a symptom of being lean. I guess that is what is happening whilst the engine is cold wanting more petrol to run right.

When is the last time you changed your intake manifold seals? If they've never been changed, it's long overdue. Don't forget some red grease, especially on the manifold-to-head seals.
