Default Voltage regulator?

I have a 2012 Sportster 1200c 9000 miles

I have a digital voltmeter on the handlebar.. it has always read 14.3 volts while running. The other day I rode to work at 14.3 volts just fine.

on the way home I noticed the volt reading was 12.3... it jumped up to 16 volts twice for a second but other than that stayed at 12.3

I came home put the bike on my trickle charger. Today I went for a ride it was at 14.3 volts for about a quarter-mile then drop back down to 12.3. I turned around and came home.

Does this sound like a bad voltage regulator?

True, but nor do you, yet! In the Tech Electrical section there are a couple of Stickies on checking your charging system. They will help you to diagnose what is causing your problem and hence what needs to be done to put things right. Let us know what you find before you start spending money!

I just changed mine. It was doing something similar but you want to test before just replacing parts. It's a pretty easy test and the regulator is easily accessible.

Been out today and just catching up...

1:27 will be your computer's clock time which will be BST probably. America is at least 5 hours behind us.

Not 100% sure on the sporty, but most regulators are grounded to the frame, in some fashion. If the mounting screws go into the frame, or maybe a wire to the frame, the connection might be loose or dirty. A missing or loose ground can cause erratic spikes of a regulator.

There is two ground points on the engine, engine case ground point and powertrain ground point. The regulator ground connects to the powertrain ground point which is on the left side behind starter on the transmission case.
