New to the forum and looking forward to picking some more experienced brains in here. I just picked up an '03 103rd anniversary "S" model that also has the Screamin' Eagle package. I'm having a h*ll of a time figuring a couple of things out. My apologies upfront, my last Sporty was an Ironhead and if there is a thread already on here addressing this topic please point me there. A few questions: Did all the S models in that year come with the SE package? Or was that a dealer upsell? Does anyone have a line on what cams, etc. that included? I think for that year those dual plug heads should be the Lightning heads? Where are the casting numbers and can you tell by them?
Long story short I kinda like the way the bike looks and it looks like l it has a decent jump on some performance ( it certainly pulled strong on the 40 mile ride home Saturday) and if so I'm probably going to pull the drive train and freshen it up over the Winter. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I'm not sure what you are calling the SE Package.
Sportster model history info:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/s...ection20002009

In 1998 the 1200 S models all got -
XL1200S changes include:
  • Single-fire ignition module (underseat) & quad-output coil
  • Dual-plug Buell Lightning heads (with hotter 'W' cams)
  • Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) Sensor (NO VOES)
The XL1200S was first available in 1996- (I think the S models have 10:1 compression ratio compared to ~9:1 for the other 1200 models)
XL 1200S:
  • Fully adjustable damping front forks and rear shocks with a slight power increase
  • Dual front floating disc brakes
For information on the various heads for Sportsters see this link:
http://www.hammerperf.com/ttxlheads.shtml

I'm sure Hammer can provide the casting number info, send them an email.

Thanks that's exactly the kind of thing I am looking for. I was referring to Screamin' Eagle when I said "SE". So I take it that the factory only recognizes the S as the model and the SE air cleaner, exhaust, control module etc., were all installed after the purchase?

SE "stage" packages were never offered for 2003 bikes. Stage packages didn't come along until much later.

There were some parts offered for that generation with the SE branding, for example SE air cleaners, SE slip-on mufflers, SE ignition modules, SE heads, SE cams (.497 or .536), an SE carb (rebranded Mikuni HSR42) SE intake manifold, SE spark plugs, probably a few pieces I'm forgetting. But no packages, and nothing branded as a "stage" piece at all. It was all piece-meal.

More than likely, you're looking at an SE air cleaner with it's insert plate that has "Screamin Eagle" scribbled across it. That was a very common part to add. But by itself, it doesn't imply any other SE parts. You have to look at each part individually.

Although the stock 1998-2003 1200S heads don't say "Screamin Eagle" on them anywhere, they are otherwise identical to the SE heads of that era. As was pointed out, they're essentially Buell Lightning heads with different cosmetics and a second spark plug hole. They'll have a casting number that ends in -96 or -96Y, because they first appeared on the 1996 Buell S1 Lightning. These were the first generation factory performance heads for the Evolution XL platform, followed by the "Thunderstorm" and then "XB" heads, each of which was better than the previous. All 1200 models got (essentially) XB heads starting in 2004 and still ship with them to this day, with only minor changes made in 2007.

The stock "W" cams in a 2003 1200S are certainly better than the "D" cams that all the other Sportsters of that generation used. But they're not a particularly high performance cam set. They became the stock piece in all 1200's starting in 2004, and all 883's as well starting in 2007.

My 03 Road King came with a Stage 1 from the dealer, whether that came from the factory or they did it, no idea. I purchased if from the original owner who had the "Sale's literature" off the floor with it. All I can contribute.

Default Thanks

Thanks all this has given me a good start. I'll investigate further, I know it has the cleaner, slip ons, and ignition module upgrades.
