I went to check my 2000 HD Sportster 1200 oil and it was almost completely empty. I noticed it was leaking from here. The bike is also running rough and wont stay running. Where is it leaking from and what do I need to fix it? thanks!
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I believe that's your head gasket . To fix it you need a new head gasket , and someone with the equipment to check for distortion of the head and barrel .
Did you run the engine before checking the oil level? If not some of your oil may have gotten past the check valve in into the sump. Start the engine, let it run for a minute, shut off and then check the level.
As for the leak - as stated looks like a head gasket. Clean it off with some brake cleaner, then run the engine and check the area for leaks. May be as simple as replacing the head gasket or there may be an issue with the head. The only way to know is to take it apart and get it checked. Good Luck!
Looks like there is some oil on the exhaust flange also, check the other side to see if it migrated from somewhere else.
