Stop playing with the wires and simply connect your voltmeter to the wire for the brake light circuit, check that the front and rear switches are powering the circuit properly...
It is very common for brake light switches to be stuck in the on position, especially the front switch.
thanks for the advice, I tested everything today and there was no issue with the circuits and then when I wired it all up again the light worked as intended. No idea whats different today compared to yesterday but if it works it works.
We have a saying on this side of the pond....... "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"! I was going to suggest that you check the front brake lever/switch as that is a common problem. I have fixed mine (fingers crossed) by tapping a hole for a tiny screw in the tip of the front brake lever to further engage the switch, and it has worked so far. Mine is a 2005 XL883 Low. Personally, I would be very suspicious of that lever and switch as mine acted in a similar way..... it would work one day, or week, and then not work for a time, then repeat the symptoms.
