Controller Area Network CAN is a way for many things to communicate their intention on 4 wires.
On a 2008 bike the left hand controls requires 8 wires mine has only 4. The wires are also smaller gauge as they don't carry much current as a switch doing an actual job like turning on the horn.
All of the switches on my bike go to the body control module BCM that decodes the data on the network and carries out the command.
The BCM is clever in so far as it knows if there is a short circuit and instead of a fuse blowing it simply stops providing power on that circuit.
