I have an 08 nightster with 1,600 miles and it has been running fine until this morning. When I went to start it, turned on the run switch, fuel pump kicked on, then i hit the ignition and it clicked once and the entire bike went dark. I have check the fuses and they all seem fine. I pulled out both relays and when i put them back in I was able to get a small flicker out of the lights and the speedo, but still won't start up. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice would be helpful, i an trying to avoid bringing it back to the dealer. Thanks
Check your connections at the battery and the frame ground and at the starter. Do you have a test light to see if there is power in the battery, maybe left the key in the ACC position and killed the battery?
The key was out of the bike last night. I checked the connection and they all seem to be solid. I was able to get the fuel pump to kick on again, but once I ht the ignition switch again the bike went completely off again, thats why I'm thinking maybe a relay problem. Is there any way to check the relays to see if they are still good? They look fine, no corrosion.

My key comes out when it is in the ACC position so it is possible to run down the battery even though the key is out, I dont think there is a relay that would shut down the whole bike, only the maxi fuse would do that but if it was blown you would have no power at all, it does sound to me like the battery is dead and only has a tiny amount of power to run the fuel pump for a few seconds, you need to get a multi meter or at least a test light on the battery to see if it is charged or not.
Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Dealer took it in, told me they charged it up and found nothing wrong with it. Now its back in the shop for the 2nd time, (bike is \\;4 months old), been three days and they still can't tell me whats wrong with it. F&\\;S Harley Davidson in Dayton, OH has lost all future business from me after this.
I'm fixed. Went back over the bike and put a wrench to both battery terminals and the bike started right up. So I guess it was just a loose terminal after all. Thank you for all your help.
