Accelerating from 1500 RPMs in which gear? Yes, sounds like you are lugging the motor most likely, so yes, it's pinging. My Sportster stays 2500 RPM and above except for idle, closer to 3000 RPMs most of the time.

Did you adjust your timing with the 1200 kit? The 883 ignition curves may not be compatible. When I did my 1250 build, I also upgraded the ignition module and re-timed it per the 1250 vendors specific instructions. SLW210's advice is good, keep that sucker revved up, these engines do not like to be lugged like the big twins.
