I pinged a few folks on another thread but thought I should start a new dedicated thread.
I have 2010 883 and am thinking about a Hammer kit. I was wondering the following:
- Which kit to get. There must be a time when the next 10 hp is $2k more. :-) So where is the best bang for the buck?
- What redline are you running?
- How did this kit affect your mpg? The Sporty has a smaller tank.
- Did you install this yourselves or was a shop required?
I got the 1250 basic kit, for $800 with all included (rings gapped, pistons installed, ignition module, spark plugs). I couldn't see spending another $150 to get an extra 2.3 hp out of the 1275, JMHO. Your 2010 will cost more as you need a clutch upgrade and a more expensive ignition/fuel tuner. My 1991 did not need a clutch.
Redline set at 6000, as I'm not big on pushing my engines. I left the 883 gearing and would rather have faster 0-60 than top speed. YMMV.
I think my mileage has dropped about 5 mpg, to 45 now. I used to get 50 mpg on the dime almost always on the 883. But, I've been blasting from 60-85 on the freeway a lot.
I did the install myself, except for having someone hold the cylinders when I installed the wrist pin clips. That was it. I did borrow some Snap On torque wrenches from our high school auto shop, but it did not require a lot of tools. I cut some PVC spacers for the cylinders and made a wrist pin extractor from some PVC and allthread with washers and nuts. That was about $3 in additional tools, plus assembly lube.
I've got just about 1000 miles now and the bike runs fantastic, no oil leaks, seeps, or noises. The extra power makes the bike much more "driveable" and having the increased torque is amazing. I think the 1250 basic kit is probably your best "bang for the buck." Going further will definitely increase the dollars/horsepower ratio. I think the basic conversion will satisfy my needs for the foreseeable future.
I’ve got the 1250 kit which included assembled and gapped pistons. Redline set at 6000 which I will never see on a Sportster. Haven’t really notice a dramatic change in fuel consumption. I installed the kit myself and found it simple enough especially getting the pistons pre installed
All in all a no bRainer upgrade that completely changes the bikes DNA
Guys,
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I am looking for. I am hoping that my son and I can put this kit in by ourselves. We will not be racing or looking for that 120hp + output but would like to have something that is really over 100hp at the wheels.
Again my bike is fuel injected, so I am going to need the Power Vision(?) that they suggest with a map that hopefully gets us close. I guess I do need to also look at the exhaust and air cleaner, we are all stock right now.

I would definitely contact Hammer and let them give you some options that you can decide which "bang for the buck" package works for you. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
I will certainly give the guys a call, but really interested in some actual experiences. Like I said I am not chasing the highest HP numbers, do want the bike to be street-able (ie not see mpg suffer too much) and want to make this a father-son project.

I'm guessing you guys did the cams as well?
Thank you again for the feedback!
high horse power 1250/1275s can be 100% streetable and mpg will not suffer if the bike is tuned properly.

I did a 1250 kit from Hammer on my 2002 over the winter, fantastic experience. Folks at Hammer were super helpful any time I ran into questions or had small issues. I've got about 1500 miles on my new 1250 so far, and it's running great. I love the power it delivers, I don't miss my 883 one bit. I don't think I've ever talked to someone with a negative opinion of Hammer, they're a super reputable company. Steer clear of NRHS brand big bore kits though.
MPG on a 1250 will never be as good as an 883, just keep that in mind haha. My 883 was getting ~55-60mpg last year. 1250 is getting 50-53 on the stock carb, but it was tuned just a hair on the lean side. I currently have a POS brand new Lectron that can't seem to break 40mpg. Do your research and read up on Hammer's website for the flash tune/re-mapping your ECM will need on your model year Sportster. It's going to be more expensive for you to do the kit than for carbed bikes. Hammer also has some great Youtube videos that walk you through the entire process.
I specifically asked Hammer about what rev-limit they recommend, this is what they told me: "The valve train is safe to 6500 or so. If you've got stock cams and heads, then the motor is probably power peaking by 6000. So if it was me, I'd put it at 6500."

That there will cost you thousands on top of the cost for the 1250 kit. Breaking 100hp on a Sporty ain't cheap. Hammer lists sample receipts for 100+ hp builds on their site. You also need performance pipes, A/C and a proper dyno-tune...not some canned map that's "close".
I think Hammer list hp around 85 for just the 883 to 1250 conversion.
