Default 2006 Sportster gas/possible carb issue.

Hey guys. I’ve been searching through forums and see people have had a similar issue to mine but not 100% the same. So I just picked up an 06 sporty 883, I test rode it before I bought it but just up and down the block, caught maybe 60 mph and it was riding fine. From a cold start too and it was riding sweet. So I buy the bike, the 15 minutes down the freeway it starts to sputter/ bogg out and I would mess with the throttle to make it go but it would just sputter, act like it’s not getting gas and then would randomly catch speed up with the throttle. Even after getting off the freeway it would do it at slower speeds. Let it sit for the night and the same thing the next day, rides super good until it is running about 10 minutes then it’ll sputter. I took the carb apart monies the float, it still sputter after 10 minutes of riding. I have seen some people say the CPS sensor could maybe be the issue but I’m not 100% due to the symptoms being different and people saying it only applies to 04/05. Should I just replace the sensor and try my luck or rebuild the whole carb because to me the sputter seems carb related. Any advice is appreciated

The fact that it`s heat related makes ignition more suspect than carburation.

In my experience of other bikes , cutting out at the same point after start up is consistent with coil failure . Ignition problems can often seem like fuel problems and vice versa .

The charging system seems to be working if that rules out anything, voltage goes up when I rev it. I’m not sure if this is related to the same issue but also if I leave my petcock to the on position fuel comes out of the air filter. Maybe that is a separate issue

My thoughts: you could go ahead and start the "plug & play" approach, swapping various parts such as a coil to see if that solves it. Not the smartest approach but eventually should work. A couple of things jump out at me. The bike is 15 years old. Don't know the details around it but I'll assume the fuel system is original. Because the carburetor/ fuel system maintenance is relatively easy and doesn't require specialty tools, I would start there. If that doesn't solve it, proceed to the electrical system. Regarding the fuel, 1) make sure the fuel tank vent, filter and tank are clean. Fuel dribbling into the float bowl may be less than the flow rate needed. 2) ensure no obstruction in your fuel line. 3) Get a complete carb rebuild kit which includes jets, float valve, gaskets, etc.. 4) Check intake manifold gaskets to make sure they are in good condition and secured tightly. Sometimes, as engines heat up, tolerances and gaps can be altered and air ingress can start causing air/fuel ratios that mess things up. If this doesn't cure your problems, I would then move onto the electrical system.

The petcock is vacuum actuated. My 2006 1200C had the similar issue - diaphragm inside the stock petcock was ripped which let fuel flow freely. Replaced the old petcock with a new one from Amazon that is not vacuum actuated, so I just put a plug/cap on the vacuum port on the intake manifold, and connected the existing fuel line to the petcock. No more problems.

YMMV - Good luck!
Link to the petcock I bought. Had it on the bike for 18 months... no issues.

sounds like an ignition coil issue to me. seems like 9 times out of 10 ignition issues once warm are problems with ignition coil.
