Question Desperate for help please

Hi Everybody.
So, I got my first Harley.... Super excited. It's a 1995 sportie 1200 and I really like it. but unfortunately I ran into issues. First I lost the speedo.... it fell down to 20 MPH and was barely moving (Miles are counting fine though). I changed the VSS and no change. I then did hours of googling and eventually saw the voltage at the battery is at 17V at Idle. Diagnosed all the way to the voltage regulator. replaced that and got 14.3. Speedo still not working. Then this afternoon went on a 20 mi trip and on my way home my tack went out. its always been jumpy, but lost it completely. Then I realised I had no blinkers... no wait.. I have nothing.. no electricity... Barely made it home. saw the battery was drained. charged it up and tack is back, but now voltage regulator gives no voltage. any help would be appreciated. I don't know anymore and I am super desperate for help. I cant afford to take it to stealership. can someone help a brother out???

The first thing I would do , just to eliminate it , is to unbolt both ends of both battery leads no matter how secure they are and give all contacting surfaces a good sandpapering back to bright metal and then reassemble . It doesn't matter how well the charging system is working if it can't get the current into the battery. As for the Speedo , the excess voltage might have blown a diode but I'm only guessing here . You probably did well to replace the rec reg because the old one may have become damaged trying to charge a battery that wasn't accepting the charge . I hope this is helpful but it's all guesswork .

Click "SEARCH" button in "CUSTOMER VIN OR INSTRUCTION SHEET LOOK-UP" then enter VIN to get a lot of useful information for your bike including the wiring diagram.

I think in your desperation to ride the bike it still has faults and they are surfacing.

Thank you so much Midpegs.....

I did notice severe corrosion on the 50A breaker. I cleaned that up so I will see how it goes. Something I didnt mention, was the all four blinker system (Emergency lights)... blinkers work fine on their own, but when I trigger all 4, it seems like not enough power is getting to it. could it be a flasher module? I converted to LEDs and installed the LED flasher relays from Amazon. and yes, I did remove them and puyt the jumpers back to test if it was the problem, it was not. it does the same with the halogen system.

Thank you for responding.

I am far, far from an expert but my 2006 1200xl developed similar problems. I checked everything, I thought. Wound up at the dealer and it turned out to be an 'accessory fuse'. That's what they called it. All my turn signal, tack and speedo problems resolved. I think they felt sorry for me and only charged me $50. Maybe check your fuses?

Thank you so much man... I switched the fuses around and it didnt seem to make any difference.

I do appreciate the reply though.

I put my ampmeter in line with the battery and couldnt see any draw with ignition off. when I turn the key it measure around 7Amps. I disconnected the headlight and it still read 4.7 Amps. does this sound right?
