Default '99 Battery Question

Good afternoon.

The '99 I purchased earlier this summer had a brand new Napa brand battery. The chrome "box" battery cover is difficult at best to install. I just bought a J&P black powder coated version and it is even worse, no doubt attributed to the thicker finish. Without the battery, which is a pain to remove, the box covers fit fine.

I measured the battery and looked up the non-HD dimensions from Yuasa and other, and they all look the same. Is it really supposed to be that tight? I really had to "shove" the cover in place, and I needed to set the top plate in place beforehand otherwise the box bows out and the cover does not fit.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thank you.

I have a 98 and removed the chrome side cover and used just the little chrome top piece along with the chrome strap. Works good. My bike is kinda bobber style so less chrome is good.

Ditch the hokey aftermarket cover, and just use what Harley gave you. An exposed battery is kind of a throwback look to earlier, and simpler, times. I leave my battery naked in the tray. I have a 1991, same exposed tray system as yours.

They fit really tight, but shouldn't bow.

Thanks everyone.

The next battery purchase will be the black variety for certain. I have battery tender leads installed so hopefully I will not have to mess with the cover very often.

Ride safe!
