Carb fitting
I just got a bunch of parts from eBay and among them was the carb rebuild kit that I'd ordered. Here's the issue, I went to put my carb on the engine (stock 2004 883) and the rubber piece between the carb and intake does not fit, the carb all but falls out of it. Did I get a bum piece or are they that loose?
Looks like ya got what ya paid for. Carb to manifold seal should be a snug press in fit. Ebay is great for Chinese knockoff crap. Look up jpcycles.com, dennidkirk.com THAT's where ya get the good stuff.
I agree...should fit perfectly. You don't want intake leaks. Not all sellers on ebay are reputable. The only time I use ebay is if I am looking for hard-to-find OEM Harley parts.....and even then, you need to be cautious and know what you are buying. Try looking at the genuine james rebuild kit from the suppliers suggested above.. .
Contact the eBay seller. They can refund your purchase.
But a new Harley Davidson piece. For something this small, just go to a local dealership. Let them charge you whatever. You don't want to wait weeks for shipping. You don't want to pay for shipping.
It is a snug fit, but the carburetor is actually held in place by the breather bolts, not the seal. OTOH, I rebuild carbs all the time on my friend's bikes, never had a problem with buying off Ebay. Most the kits actually have more extras (new jets, etc.) than just the usual kits. Bought a few HD kits too, no issues. Be sure to change out the manifold-to-head seals too, It's recommended to use dish soap, although I've always used red high temp grease. Good luck.
Are you fitting the rubber to the manifold first ? It's quite easy to get this wrong if the inner web of the rubber gets buckled . I'm sure you are aware but the rubber has a double skin . The inner one goes inside the manifold and the outer one goes outside . Once the rubber is squarely seated on the manifold , the carb should push in easily but with enough tightness to stay securely in place while you fit the breather bolts and backplate . If you are following these steps and the carb is just falling out again it's time for a new rubber .

Turns out that a non stealership had the right seal for me at a very reasonable $8.00 CDN along with new exhaust gaskets so I bought them along with a patch from the store all for under $50 CDN. works like a charm!
