Doing a Hammer kit this winter on my 05 883 Custom and don't have a tach on the bike currently. Since I am supposed to stay under 3.5k for the first 500 miles I thought a little tach might be worthwhile. It is my understanding that mechanical is not an option? Any cheapo favorites someone can recommend?
You could probably get one of those RPM apps that also has much more info, like speedo, tach, gear indicator, engine temp, etc. RPMitUp has something here for iPhone or Android. Then get the 4-pin cable for cheap here to attach to the data port on your bike and a bluetooth OBD II adaptor here.
No, but I didn't have any problem "estimating" my RPM's using an 883 gearing (RPM/MPH) chart during break in on my 1250 build last year. It's relatively simple to remember what gear/speeds are the limits during your break in period. Save your money for some good refreshments when your bike is post 500 miles. Good luck, you'll love the difference.
A factory Sportster tach is a great option if you can find one off of fb market place, flea bay ect otherwise I recommend cycle pro auto meter tachs. In my experience, cheap and properly working tachs do not go hand in hand. Like another stated, its not too difficult to determine where you are at. But, if you dont have experience, then a tach might be a good idea. I live off the tachometer
