Rear lights / lamp module
Looking at the wiring diagram, I expected to the following wires heading out back; Red/yellow, Blue, Black (all for the Tail Lamp), black & purple (for turn lights).
However, what I actually see are:
- - Orange/White
- - Brown
- - Blue
- - Red Yellow
- - Purple
- - Black
All help gratefully received, as I'm really keen to get a few miles in over the christmas holidays!
R/Y is brake light power
BE is running light power
BK is ground
V and BN is indicator but don't know which side.
Your wiring diagram is not as good as the HD one - 99949-08_en - 2008 Wiring Diagrams (harley-davidson.com)
I hope it's of use to you.
HDI stands for Harley-Davidson International, overseas models.
DOM stands for Domestic (USA) home market models,
The main difference is in the indicator lamp units, DOM market models have running lights front in the front indicators, but not on in the rear ones.
The USA rear indicator lenses are red,
The UK has HDI models.
Hope that clears it with you.

The diagram (reproduced below) is really interesting - the 6 cable slots on the rear light module are spot on in terms of the colours. However they are also replicated going out to the lamps - as you can see in the pic I posted. Which got me wondering - that diagram shows 3 different exit areas - one for each of the indicators and one for the rear lamp; that's clearly different to mine (again, as per pic). As this is a 2008 diagram, is there one for 2006 and 2007? I'd look myself but it looks like it needs a login of sorts....
thanks in advance - I'm really grateful for your support!

My wiring diagram (granted it's 1991) shows brown wires to right signals, violet to left signals. Front signals are frame grounded, but use a BLK and V and BLK and BN for left and right. BLK wire is running light power. Of course, maybe the individual signals are wired the same colors from bulb to connector for universal installation, and the use of a BN wire ends at the connector block.

There isn't a mistake i=on the coloured wiring diagram, both left and right turn signal lamp units for 2009 HDI Sportster share the same part number, 68978-00 which has black and violet wires. The socket that they plug into has the correct coloured wiring for their respective sides, black & brown for the right hand and black & violet for the left hand side.
