I replaced my CPS and I lost about 1/2 cup of Formula+ out of the primary. Can I just remove the primary chain inspection plate and add the oil in?
2004 XL1200C
I refilled my primary chain oil by removing the chain inspection plate last week on my 2011 XL883N.
The drain plug 'O' ring was weeping some oil onto my garage floor, so obviously when I removed the plug to replace the seal the oil poured out and it had to be replaced. I removed the inspection plate and carefully removed the gasket so as not to damage it. I leaned the machine over to the right hand side and using a small plastic funnel, I poured in the new oil, replaced the gasket and cover and I've had no leaks so far.
Well mjanop thinks he lost 1/2 cup full and wants to top up not do a full fill. Maybe just this time he is going to have to sit the bike upright with the derby cover off to see the level?

And what makes everyone think that PRIMARY OIL is going to leak out when you remove the Crank Position Sensor ?

To the best of my knowledge , the Crank Position Sensor is located in the CRANKCASE and not in the Primary Chain Case . Therefore the half a cup of oil that leaked out was more likely to have been Engine Oil . Although described as a Dry Sump design , the reality is that there is always quite a bit of oil in the bottom of a Sportster engine .

An even better reason then to check the primary level before just pouring in more oil.
I thought the OP knew what he was doing!

Well, It appears I may have been way off base with my diagnosis. I thank you very much for opening my eyes. I am pretty mechanically inclined, but I obviously have a LOT more to learn. That is why this forum is so valuable. Thank you so much Midpegs and all.
