I just purchased this a project bike with a 97 Sportster 883 engine. Trying to figure out what is missing in this picture. I have been through the shop manual a few times and don't see anything like this.
This is between the starter and the rear engine mount.

I don't have that on my 1991, but I'm going to guess it's where your speedometer sensor goes. They got rid of the front wheel speedo cable in 1995 IIRC.
