I've been getting a check engine light on my 2014 XL1200C for a short time after the first cold start and wanted to see if there were codes stored that would help me understand what's causing it.
Looking in the 2014 Harley Davidson Sportster Diagnostic Manual (page 1-7), step 1 says, "To enter diagnostic mode, press and hold the trip odometer reset switch ... while turning the IGN ON". Step 2 says, "Release the trip odometer reset switch, "diag" will appear in the odometer display."
But after I release the trip odometer reset switch after the ignition is "on", I don't see the "diag" message in the odometer display. All I see is a zero in the odometer field. If I press the Trip reset switch again, the zero goes away and is replaced by the display I had selected when I last rode the bike.
The first time I tried this the Off/Run switch (on the right control cluster) was "off". I thought that maybe that had to be in "Run" for the diag to work and tried it again in "Run". I got the same result - no "diag", just a zero.
The manual does mention that if there is a problem with the CAN bus, the diag may not work. But everything on the bike - lights, engine, etc. - works as it should so the CAN has to be functional.
I'm confused. Does this mean that there are no codes stored and that the "DIAG" is not needed or is there some other thing I'm missing?
Thanks! I have discovered that it's my turn to be a moron. I was only turning the ignition switch to the first click ("Accessory On"). When I turned it to the second click ("Ignition ON") it worked like it was supposed to (no codes either, thankfully).

Sigh. Nothing for it but to go for a ride.
Not a moron, **** happens! Good on you for sharing the solution, it'll will help someone else one of these days!
